CentOS / RHEL 5 by RPM

Wed, 2008-12-24 08:09

by FunkyRes (Posted Tue Dec 23, 2008 11:09 pm)

Has anyone gotten this to install via RPM w/o replacing vendor packages?

I grabbed the src.rpm for Fedora:

qgis-0.11.0-1.src.rpm qgis-1.0.0-1.src.rpm

from http://www.silfreed.net/download/repo/packages/qgis/

I grabbed the grass spec file from the Fedora/EPEL cvs server, had to modify the spec file to get it to build (disable an option that caused it to want a library that it seems isn't packaged for rhel or fedora) - but it did build and installed.

Trying to build qgis 1.0 src.rpm however - during the build process it complained about PyQt. Needs 4, RHEL has 3.
The older stable stable 0.11.0 had the same issue

I normally don't like replacing vendor packages but since I wasn't using PyQt I figured sure, why not.
PyQt wanted a newer version of sip than RHEL/CentOS has - so I again I figured why not, it's something I didn't have installed anyway, and I grabbed the sip src.rpm from Fedora 9. However, building sip wanted a newer qt than RHEL/CentOS has - and qt is a pretty major library, I'm not going to upgrade it.

Maybe I can make a "qt-compat" package and install the newer version side by side with the CentOS qt - I'll try that and see if qt installs in a way that allows that (properly versioned shared libs etc.) if there aren't any other suggestions, but man, this is almost as much of a PITA as getting full proper multimedia support was.

layers with different coordinate systems

Wed, 2008-12-24 07:08

by Pinquin (Posted Tue Dec 23, 2008 10:08 pm)

Hello,

WGS84 is not a coordinate system, its just a Datum or Reference Ellipsoid (or both at once)
There is lots of literature about that --> Wikipedia for example could help for a first idea;
but about coordinate systems there's tons of information in the internet.

But generally about the projection of different coordinate systems in QGIS
1. you have to activate OTF ("On The Fly Projection") in the project properties
2. you have to specify the correct projection for each layer

Then erverything should work well.
I hope that helps and if you have more problems feel free to ask again...
good luck
Pinguin

p.s.: OTF works only with vector data, so all you rasta-data should be in the same coordinate system

Hydrological basins

Yes, you are exactly right. There is no attribute which can be seen as an information, which basin belonge to which. There are categories (level 1, level 2, level 3), but they don't represent the european bassins...

layers with different coordinate systems

by ranger (Posted Mon Dec 22, 2008 7:53 pm)

Hello,
I started a new project with the Gaus-Krueger coordinate system. I added a raster layer (*.tif) with the Gaus-Krueger coordinate system and a vector layer in WGS84. Now I have both layers in my project, but the vector layer is about 500m north of the raster layer or vice versa (I don´t know). What could be the problem?

error_reporting

I was having a problem with wfs similar to that described here. The server would return a list of layers, but when trying to add a layer I would get the message 'The layer is not a valid layer and can not be added to the map'. However I knew the data should be OK as I'm able to access the WFS with MapInfo.

I managed to solve the problem this way - it seems that some wfs servers (we're using MapXtreme) need the namespace added to the typename, and won't work without it. The WFS plugin should probably negotiate that, but as of version 0.1 it doesn't.

Using the Python console I manged to load my layer...

iface.addVectorLayer("http://myservername/GetFeature.ashx?REQUEST=GetFeature&TYPENAME=namespace:wantedlayer&SERVICE=WFS&VERSION=1.0.0", "Layer Name", "WFS")

Hope this helps someone who's been having the same issue....

Hydrological basins

Well,
there is a grass module v.dissolve for dissolving boundaries of polygons with the same value of some attribute.
But I am afraid that there is no attribute in hydro1k dateset which can be used for this reason.
It is quite surprising for me but (in my opinion) the information which basin belongs to basin of "higher order" is not present in the hydro1k dateset.
Am I right?

Grass plugin for QGIS 0.11.0

Sun, 2008-12-21 20:44

by juminet (Posted Sun Dec 21, 2008 11:44 am)

Hello,

I know that it was already asked in this forum but I didn't find any help in these previous message! I just want to have the grass plugin within Qgis.
I have QGIS 0.11.0-metis & GRASS 6.2.3 both installed. But I can't find any grass plugin in the plugin manager under Qgis neither in /usr/lib/qgis/.

Some one can help me indicating something to download or activate?

Oh yes I work on Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid...

Thanks!

Julien

Hi,
I am completly new to GIS and also QGIS - so I will decribe what I did, maybe someone could help me.

1) I got some GPS coordinates from west africa / Burkina Faso
2) I typed it in a CVS-File and used GPSBabel to create a GPX file
3) I used the freeware tool GPXEditor and displayed the GPX file in Google Maps --> all looks fine and OK
-- But GPXEditor has now feature to measure distances and areas

4) To overcome the limits of GPXEditor I run QGIS (currently 0.9.1)
5) I loaded my GPX file in QGIS
6) In the project properties is used meters and selected as coordinate system Abidjan 1987 / UTM zone 30N
7) Now I can measure and what the results seem to makes some sense
My problem: I ony see points - but I want some mapes or satelite images (similar to google maps / google earth) in the background

Until now I failed to get a map or satelite image. I played around with views but without any succes.

Maybe someone could advise me? And: is there a good book / internet site that could give me some background information about GIS?

Thanks a lot,
jmu

Georeference Vector datasets

What about using GRASS tools to convert one of the vectors into a raster, georeference it and then you could convert it into a vector?

OS Question-Linux users

I'm running the basic Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex. So far, QGIS 0.11 has been working without any major glitches. I've heard of Ubuntu being installed on some pretty bare-bones configurations with the gui up and running properly. For regular operation, it uses 700MB of ram on my machine, but that's with 0 swap usage. The reason I switched over was because everything was slow and unstable under Vi**a and I'm pretty sure that XP has no support for my hardware.

Select by Location using selected features (fTools)

Sat, 2008-12-20 04:11

by sim (Posted Fri Dec 19, 2008 7:11 pm)

Do I undestand right that using fTools it is not possible to Select by Location using only *selected features* of the source theme?

If it is so, I believe this ability would be of great value. Hope cfarmer can put it on todo list May be a checkbox like "use selected only" can be added after "that intersect features in:"

I'm using 0.11.

shapefile as Postgis layer

Fri, 2008-12-19 21:40

by wwwald (Posted Fri Dec 19, 2008 12:40 pm)

The PostGis layer is in your database, it's not available as a regular file on your hard drive.

To view it, you can select Layer menu > Add Postgis Layer..., select the database and the table corresponding to the imported SHP file. The data will be directly loaded from the database into QGis.

Greets,
wwwald

Newbie: Selectbylocation??

Fri, 2008-12-19 21:27

by grekou (Posted Fri Dec 19, 2008 12:27 pm)

I admit I am a real newbie in all this GIS stuff but in QGIS as well!!
The point is that I will need to use a GIS only for locating and identifying shapes that are within a "x" distance from a given polygon...etc
this can be easily achieved in ESRI ASRGIS by the select by location function
So the question is can that be done from QGIS? (I've read somewhere that that's not possible)
I think you can imagine that the answer is critical for me to start using GIS at all!!!
thank you for patience!

Fri, 2008-12-19 18:46

by chandrimadey (Posted Fri Dec 19, 2008 9:46 am)

Hi,

I am a student, using Mapinfo 6. I am very much confused about measuring the map scale. Whenever im going to plot a scale bar in cosmetic layer its being conically placed, why is this happening? N do I measure the Scale value n scale width as well. For exampl I say Distance from A point (in digitized map) to B point is 810 miters. Then how could I measure the map scale n the Scale width? And If I want to represent the Scale like 1cm=?? km/mtrs what should I do n what will bw the suitable scale for the map? Step by step guidance will help me out.

Cheers,
Chandrima.

Multiple map views in print composer

Thu, 2008-12-18 20:16

by setecastronomy (Posted Thu Dec 18, 2008 11:16 am)

In the qGis manual I read that inside print composer it is possible to have multiple views of a map.
Perhaps I didn't understand but I thought its meaning was that I can put 2 maps on the same layout, each displaying different layers selected inside qGis main window. That's what I would like to do, but I cannot find any way.

Thanks
Filippo
